Rummy, rummy

The Newbold Spirit story starts in Scotland. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

A friend has a distillery on one of the Scottish Islands and he made it look fascinating, exciting and so, so cool to be doing something that is - well, really cool. One evening, around a beach campfire – my husband and I realised that with our combined skills in chemistry, hospitality, business and marketing - we could really start our own small-batch rum and gin company.

Processing both rum and gin, the husband and wife team of Victoria and Ian’s first stage was to create a drink that they’d want to drink themselves. ‘We really trust our sense of taste and smell. Once we’ve established what we consider to be a marketable taste, we work with our genius master distiller who helps us create our gin and rum.’

The family behind Newbold Spirit

With all this vast experience, testing and tasting we were keen to ask Victoria what’s her personal favourite flavour of Newbold Spirit and why?

I’d say that each of our drinks has a time and place that makes it my favourite. One fond taste memory is during one of the lockdowns, we built a patio. It was backbreaking work in hot weather and at the end of each day, we sat down with a Newbold Spiced Rum and coke. I don’t think a spiced rum and coke had ever tasted as good!

Dark & Stormy

Creating Newbold Spirit has been Victoria's most challenging, yet rewarding experience in her career. ‘I knew that I would enjoy the creative aspects of running a business, but I was unsure how I would cope with accounts – to my surprise, I find them, strangely satisfying!’

A typical creative working day at Newbold Spirit?

Ahh, there is no such thing as a typical working day for a small business! Shall I tell you one of my favourite things instead? Newbold Spirit trades at lots of local markets and festivals. I really love the magic of a market or festival being set up - there is a fantastic sense of community and excitement for a successful day’s trading. We are very lucky that we have so many skilled artisan and crafts people in Warwickshire.

With the benefits of having an indie premium spirit, Victoria’s advice to her younger self would be simply – ‘Be brave, don’t be scared to start your own business’, along with the realisation of ‘We certainly wish we started Newbold Spirit years ago.’

With all this creativity there are plans to do non/low-alcoholic beverages, ‘We get asked this question a lot and are working on a non-alcoholic version of our cherry gin.’ 🍒 Not leaving anyone out - Good news for all you teetotallers.

Newbold Negroni

With our personal favourite spirit being the spiced rum 👌 we wanted to know what Newbold cocktails they rate and why. Victoria elegantly described it -

My absolute favourite cocktail is a variation of a Dark and Stormy, made with Newbold Spiced Rum and ginger beer. A Dark and Stormy reminds me of being around a campfire, on a beach at sunset with friends and family, there’s plenty of food and drink and someone is playing a guitar – this is pretty much my idea of perfect!

It definitely does sound perfect 🏖🎸

By keeping events and festivals local to Warwickshire in 2021 – mainly due to the COVID cancellation effect, plans for 2022 and beyond for Newbold Spirit see an exciting new product to be launched in Spring – ‘Sshhhh! can’t say anymore…..’ We won’t! 🤫🤐 While Victoria has high hopes for lots of gin and rum festivals further afield in 2022 🥃

The perfect complement to enjoy life’s best moments with or without some food. Have you already tried out Newbold Spirit? What are your thoughts?
